174 NOTES ON OEIBA. lj_l| poll, longiis, petioLuli ^-^ poll, longi. ^ Flores actinomorphi. Calyx coriacens bilobatus, externe glaber, interne pallide aureo- brunneo-sericeus, circiter 1-1|^ poll, longus. Petala baud expansa late linearia externe rufo-tomentosa, apice subobtusa, circiter 2| poll, longa. Stamina (immatura ?) petalis breviora, filamenta gfabra medium versus in tubum cylindricum connata, tubus fere 1 poll, longus. Antherge ut in Cucurbitaceis undulato-plicatge. Stylus glaber, stamina superans. Hab. Merida, Yucatan, Schott. " Pocbote." We are unable to determine the number of leaflets, they having become detached from the common petiole. It is allied to C. cbscuU- folia {= Bomhax cEsculifnlium H. B. K. (Eriodendron'DG.)) and C. tomentosa. The former differs by its leaflets being serrated at the margins ; in the latter the leaflets are also serrated, and the staminal column is much shorter, and correspondingly the free filaments are longer. Also allied to C. Burchellii K. Schum., from Brazil, but this plant has a more cylindrical calyx. There is a plant in the Kew Herbarium, collected by Bernoulli and Carlo in Guatemala, No. 3128, which is very closely allied, but the lobes of the calyx are slightly mucronate. We have two sheets in the British Museum Herbarium from Herb. Pavon, labelled "Bombax erianthos de Mexico." These seem to agree very nearly with the description based upon imperfect material of Bomhax cesciilifoUum (H. B. K. Nov. Gen. v. 298). The leaflets are not, however, smooth below, but slightly ferruginous tomenfcose on the veins and at the base. The petals are broadly linear and ferruginous hirsute externally, and about 3 in. long, whereas Kunth describes those of cBsculifolium as " subquinque- pollicaria " ; he adds, however, " nonnisi fragmenta floris vidi." In the Pavon plant the style is hirsute towards the apex, while in B. (Bsculifolium it is described as glabrous. C. boliviana, sp. n. Arbor. Kamuli baud armati cortice glabro plumbeo-rubro. Folia 3-4-foliolata. Foliola obovata vel late oblanceolata, apice acuminata ad basin attenuata utrinque glabra, margine integra vel parce serrulata, 2|-3 poll, longa, subtus nervo medio prominente venis tenuibus subparallelis breviter petiolu- lata (petiolulus 2-2J- lin. longus). Petiolus communis strictus, li-li po^l- longus. Flores inter maximos generis zygomorphi. Calyx crassus coriaceus, externe glaber vel glabriusculus, interne pallide tomentosus, 1^ poll, longus, 3-lobatus, lobi rotundati vel subacuti. Petala crassa obovata, circiter 3| poll, longa, staminibus paulo breviora externe et interne praecipue superne tomentosa. Staminum columna basi ovarium cingens sursum in filamenta quinque divisa, tubo stamineo quam calyce paulo longiore in medio coronula staminodiorum cincto. Stylus curvatus glaber, staminibus subsequilongus, stigmate capitato. Fructus immaturus, 1|- poll, longus, rubro-fuscus, pedunculus fructigerus validus, circiter poll, longus, glaber. Hab. Bolivia, Vic. Cochabamba, M. Bang, No. 1154. Allied to C. puhiftora K. Schum., but the flower is considerably larger in all its parts.
