PATERNOSTER-ROW. JOHNSON'S SPORTSMAN'S DICTIONARY. This Day is Publishedy in Twelve Parts, to be had by one or more at a time. Price 2s, 6d. each, A New and Original Work, entitled, — ^The SPORTSMAN'S CYCLOPEDIA; Being an Elucidation of the Science and Practice of THE FIELD, THE TURF, AND THE SOD; Or, in other Words, the Scientific Operations of THE CHASE, THE COURSE, And of all those Diversions and Amusements which hare uniformly marked the Character of the Inhabitants of these Islands ; and which are so ardently cherished, and so extensirely followed, by the present Generation : comprehending the Natural History of all those Animals which constitute the Objects of Pursuit, accompanied with illnstratire Anecdotes. BY T. B. JOHNSON, Adthor of the Shooter's Companion, &c. &c. In announcing the present work to the Sporting World, the Publishers do not deem any apology necessary, as there is no Book on sale professedly of a similar character, nor one that will furnish a Sportsman with that information which he may desire on the various Field Sports of the present day. The great di£Qculty of obtaining practical and scientific instructions i^garding Sporting Subjects is, because practical Sportsmen very rarely feel disposed for literary labour ; while professed literary men seldom, if ever, pursue the Sports of the Field ; and, in consequence, when called upon, as the means of subsistence, to write upon such subjects, their presumed theoretical knowledge has enabled them merely to manifest their incapacity for the performance of the task they had undertaken — their profound ignorance of a science upon which ^ey professed to impart instruction, and to render more interesting by copious detail and correct elucidation.
