OUR Lord the King, at his Parliament hold- en at Leicejler the laft Day of April, the Second Year of his Reign, by the Advice and Affent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and at the fpecial Inftance and Requeft of the Com- mons of his Realm in the fame Parliament affem- bled, hath ordained and eftablifhed divers Ordi- nances, Declarations, and Statutes, made in the Form as followeth." CAP. I. Ordinaries mall inquire of, and reform the Eflates of Hofpitals. FIRST, Forafmuch as many Hofpitals within the Realm of England, founded as well by the noble Kings of .his Realm, and Lords and Ladies both Spiritual and Temporal, as by divers other Ef- tates, to the Honour of God and of his glorious Mother, in Aid and Merit of the Souls of the faid Founders, to the which Hofpitals the fame Founders have given a great Part of their moveable Goods for the Buildings of the fame, and a great Part of their Lands and Tenements, therewith to fuftain impotent Men and Women, Lazers, Men out of their Wits, and poor Women with Child, and to nourifh, re- lieve, and refrefh other poor People in the fame, be now for the moft Part decayed, and the Goods and Profits of the fame, by divers Peribns, as well Spi- ritual as Temporal, withdrawn and fpent in other Ufe, whereby many Men and Women have died in great Mifery for Default of Aid, Living, and Succour, to the Difpieafure of God, and Peril of the Souls of fuch Manner of Spenders :" ' (2) The King our Sovereign Lord, confidering the merito- rious and devout Intents of the Founders aforefaid, and the unaccuftomed Government in the fame, hath by the Advice and Affent aforefaid, ordained and eftablifhed, That as to the Hofpitals which be of the Patronage and Foundation of the King, the Ordinaries, by virtue of the King's Commiffions to them directed, fhall inquire of the Manner and Foundation of the faid Hofpitals, and of the Gover- nance and Eftate of the fame, and of all other Mat- ters neceffary and requifite in this Behalf, and the Inquifitions thereof taken (hall certify in the King's Chancery. (3) And as to other Hofpitals which be of another Foundation and Patronage than of the King, the Ordinaries fhall inquire of the Manner of the Foundation, Eftate, and Governance of the fame, and of all other Matters and T'hings neceffary in this Behalf, and upon that make thereof Correc- tion and Reformation according to the Laws of holy Church, as to them belongeth.
