And whereas a Practice hath of late prevailed for Perfons to cut out and tear off the Mark or off the Mark on ' Stamp upon the fpotted or painted Side of playing Cards after fuch Cards have been fold, ufed or played pUying^Cards, or t ^^ anc [ by pafting on and affixing the fame Stamps and Marks on other Cards, do frequently make one or'new fpotti"" ' Mark or Stamp ferve for two or three feveral Packs of Cards : And whereas the Seal and Stamp upon any Dice which ' the outfide Papers inclofing each Pack of Cards are frequently made ufe of again after they have been fold have been fold, « and difpofed of, to inclofe other Packs of playing Cards, by which fraudulent and unjuft Practices his &c forfeit iol. ' Majefty's Revenue is daily leffened and diminilhed :' For Remedy whereof, Be it enacted by the Autho- rity aforefaid, That if any Perfon or Perfons, at any Time after the firft Day of Auguft one thoufand (even hundred and twenty, fhall fraudulently cut, tear or get off any Mark or Stamp in refpect whereof or whereby any Duties are payable, or are denoted to be paid or payable to his Majefty on playing Cards, or fhall file, fquare or new fpot any Dice which have been fold or played with, or fhall fraudulently inclofe any Parcel or Pack of playing Cards in any outfide Paper fo fealed and ftamped as aforefaid, the fame ha- ving been once made ufe of for the Purpofe aforefaid, or in cafe any Perfon or Perfons fhall hereafter fell or expofe to Sale any playing Cards, the fame not being, at the Time of fuch Selling or expofing to Sale, actually ftamped on the fpotted or painted Side, and alfo inclofed in Paper and Thread, fealed and ftamped, as by the Act of the tenth Year of her faid late Majefty Queen Anne, which charges the faid Duties, is 30 Ann. c. ig. directed; then, fo often, and in every fuch Cafe, every Perfon fo offending in any of the Particulars be- ' * ' fore-mentioned fhall for every fuch Offence forfeit the Sum of ten Pounds, to be recovered by Action of • Debt, Bill, Plaint or Information in any of his Majefty's Courts of Record at Weftminfter, wherein no Ef- foin, Protection or Wager of Law fhall be admitted, nor more than one Imparlance; one Moiety whereof to the King's moft Excellent Majefty, his Heirs and Succeffors, the other Moiety to the Informer; and the Perfon recovering in fuch Action fhall be allowed his full Cofts. 5 Ann. c, 23- * LVI. And whereas by an Act of Parliament made in the ninth Year of the Reign of her late Majefty ' Queen Anne, for licenfing and regulating Hackney-Coaches and Chairs, and for charging certain new ' Duties on ftampt Vellum, Parchment and Paper; it was (inter alia) provided, That for every Piece of

  • Vellum or Parchment, or Sheet or Piece of Paper, on which fhould be engroffed or written any Licence

' for felling of Ale or Beer, or other excifeable Liquors, by Retail, a Duty of one Shilling fhould be paid to

  • her Majefty, her Heirs and Succeffors, during the Term of thirty-two Years : And whereas a Practice
  • has obtained to take the ufual Recognizances from Perfons for whom Ale-Licences are intended for felling
  • Ale and other excifeable Liquors, and to take a Lift of their Names, and the Fees for fuch Licences, but to
  • omit to make out or write the fame, to avoid the Payment of the Stamp-Duties given thereon, and to

omit the Writing of other Matters charged with Stamp-Duties fince the making of the Act of Parliament 1 Ann. Stat c 12, ' lineations of fuch Ale-Licences, Policies of Infurance, and feveral other Matters and Things chargeable

  • with the Payment of the Stamp-Duty, to make one Stamp ferve for feveral Purpofes :' Now for the Pre-

And whereas by a Statute made in the ninth Year of the Reign of her late Majefty Queen ic§. 41. c Anne, f or licenfing and regulating Hackney-Coaches and Chairs, and for charging certain new Duties on ' ftampt Vellum, Parchment and Paper, and on Cards and Dice, it was (inter alia) enacted, That the

  • ■ Makers of Cards and Dice, during the Term therein mentioned, fhould once in every twenty-eight Days

' make true Entries upon Oath with the Commiffioners of the Stamp-Duties, or their Officers, of all the

  • Cards and Dice by them refpectively made; and fhould once in every fix Weeks clear all the Duties owing

' for the fame, under the Penalties therein mentioned : And whereas the refepective Card-Makers do often - make up Cards, the Duties on which amount to fifty Pounds and upwards per Week, and each Card-- ' Maker may make up treble that Quantity, if he fhall think fit, whereby they have an Opportunity of be- ' ing greatly in Arrear to his Majefty, and the faid Duties are thereby often in Danger of being loft, in re- ' gard the fame Act hath made no Provifion whatever for fecuring the faid Duties, until the faid fix Weeks ' fhall expire, be the Danger ever fo apparent:' For Remedy whereof, Be it enacted by the Authority Card Makers at aforefaid, That from and after the firft Day of Auguft one thoufand feven hundred and twenty every Card- entimg therr Maker fhall be obliged, at the refpective Times of entring every Parcel or Quantity of playing Cards as BojriinaMnal a f° re f a M> t0 enter into Bond to his Majefty, his Heirs and Succeffors, with fufficient Surety or Sureties, 4 in
