  1. இலை தின்னி காய் அறியான்.
    He who feeds on leaves knows not the flavor of fruit.

  2. இலையும் பழுப்பும் எங்கும் உண்டு.
    Leaves green and sear are found every where.

  3. இலௌகீகம் வைதீகம் இரண்டும் வேண்டும்.
    The secular and the sacred are both necessary.

  4. இல்லது வாராது உள்ளது போகாது.
    That which is not will not come, that which is, will not go.

  5. இல்லறம் பெரிது துறவறம் சிறிது.
    Domestic life is better than that of the ascetic.

  6. இல்லறம் பெரிது துறவறம் பழிப்பு.
    Domestic life is honourable, that of the ascetic is disgraceful.

  7. இல்லாதவன் பொல்லாதவன்.
    He that is destitute is wicked.

  8. இல்லாதது பிறவாது அள்ளாதது குறையாது.
    That which is not, will not come out; that from which nothing is taken; will not lessen.

  9. இல்லாது சொல்லி அல்லற் படுதல்.
    Uttering a falsehood and suffering the evil thereof.

  10. இல்லாளை விட்டு வல்லாண்மை பேசுகிறதா?
    What! is it to speak manfully after deserting thy wife?

  11. இல்லாதும் இல்லன் இருப்பதும் இல்லன்.
    He lacks nothing, nor does he possess any thing.

  12. இல்லாதவன் பெண்சாதி எல்லாருக்கும் தோழியா?
    Is the wife of the destitute the friend or companion of all?

  13. இல்லை என்ற வீட்டில் பல்லியும் சேராது.
    Even a lizard will not enter a house occupied by the niggardly.
