after the outbreak of Nietzsche's illness, in March 1892, so that the whole of Zarathustra, containing all four parts, appeared no earlier than July 1892, since which time it has gone through several editions. The aim of the present translation has been to give the meaning of the German text as exactly as could be done. Where several interpretations of words or sentences were possible, as is rather frequently the case, that interpretation was chosen which seemed to agree best with the context, although the decision of this question is in many cases quite arbitrary. For the few facts regarding the composition of Thus Spake Zarathustra the editor is obliged to Dr. Fritz Koegel's Nachbericht to Vol. VI of the German edition.
