August fourth, eighteen hundred and fifty-four, be so construed as to extend to the clerks employed in the Census Office the same additional compensation granted by the act of April twenty-second, eighteen hundred and fifty—1"0ur. Lieutenant- General by Brevet, fw Eminent Services. ·—————————-—- Resolved, by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the grade of lieutenant- Gmdeof Lieu— general be, and the same is hereby, revived in the army of the United ;gc?;gf°“°r“l States, in order that when, in the opinion of the President and Senate, it shall be deemed proper to acknowledge eminent services of a major-gem eral of the army in the late war with Mexico, in the mode already provided for in subordinate grades, the grade of lieutenant-geneml may be specially conferred by brevet, and by brevet only, to take rank from the date of such service or services: Provided, however, That when the said VHGHSCY not to grade of lieutenant-general by brevet shall have once been filled, and b° mm ' have become vacant, this joint resolution shall thereafter expire and be of no effect.
