Public Law 100-588 100th Congress An Act To amend the Archaeological Resources Protection Act of 1979 to strengthen the enforcement provisions of that Act, and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, SECTION 1. AMENDMENTS TO ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESOURCES PROTECTION ACT OF 1979.
(a) Section 3(3) of such Act is amended by striking out the semicolon at the end thereof and substituting a period. (b) Section 6(a) of such Act is amended by inserting after "deface" the following: ", or attempt to excavate, remove, damage, or otherwise alter or deface". (c) Section 6(d) of such Act is amended by striking "$5,000" and inserting in lieu thereof "$500". (d) Section 10 of such Act is amended by adding the following new subsection at the end thereof: "(c) Each Federal land manager shall establish a program to increase public awareness of the significance of the archaeological resources located on public lands and Indian lands and the need to protect such resources. Each such land manager shall submit an annual report to the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs of the United States House of Representatives and to the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources of the United States Senate regarding the actions taken under such program.".
