SEC. 52 6 . MODIFICATION OF LIMITATIONS ON A U THORI Z ED STRENGTHS OF RESERVE GENERAL AND FLAG OFFICERS IN ACTIVE STATUS SERVING IN JOINT DUTY ASSIGNMENTS. (a) EXCLUSION O FARMY AN D AIR F ORC EO FFICERS SER V IN G IN J OIN TD UTY ASSIGNMENTS. — Subsection (b) of section 1200 4 of title 10, United States Code, is amended by adding at the end the follo w ing new paragraph

‘‘(4) T hose ser v ingina j oint duty assignment for purposes of chapter 38 of this title, e x cept that the number of officers who may be excluded under this paragraph may not exceed the number e q ual to 20 percent of the number of officers authori z ed for the armed force concerned by subsection (a).’’. (b) EXCLUSION OF N AVY OFFICERS SERVING IN JOINT DUTY ASSIGNMENTS.—Subsection (c) of such section is amended— (1) by redesignating paragraphs (2), (3), and (4) as para - graphs (3), (4), and (5), respectively; and (2) in paragraph (1), by striking ‘‘(1)’’ and all that follows through ‘‘as follows

’’ and inserting the following: ‘‘(1) The following Navy reserve officers shall not be counted for purposes of this section: ‘‘(A) Those counted under section 526 of this title. ‘‘( B ) Those serving in a joint duty assignment for purposes of chapter 38 of this title, except that the number of officers who may be excluded under this paragraph may not exceed the number equal to 20 percent of the number of officers authorized for the Navy in subsection (a). ‘‘(2) Of the number of Navy reserve officers authorized by subsection (a), 40 are distributed among the line and staff corps as follows:’’. (c) EXCLUSION OF M ARINE COR P S OFFICERS SERVING IN JOINT DUTY ASSIGNMENTS.—Subsection (d) of such section is amended to read as follows: ‘‘(d) The following Marine Corps reserve officers shall not be counted for purposes of this section: ‘‘(1) Those counted under section 526 of this title. ‘‘(2) Those serving in a joint duty assignment for purposes of chapter 38 of this title, except that the number of officers who may be excluded under this paragraph may not exceed the number equal to 20 percent of the number of officers authorized for the Marine Corps in subsection (a).’’. SEC. 52 7 . REPORTS ON JOINT EDUCATION COURSES AVAILABLE THROUGH THE DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE. (a) R EPORTS RE Q UIRED.—Not later than April 1 of each of 200 9 , 2010, and 2011, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff shall submit to Congress a report setting forth information on the joint education courses available through the Department of Defense for purposes of the pursuit of joint careers by officers in the Armed Forces.
