( e )AD D IT I ONAL T ERMS AND CONDITIONS. — The Secretary m ay re q uire such additional terms and conditions in connection with the conveyance under subsection (a) or the conveyance, i f any, under subsection (d) as the Secretary considers appropriate to pro - tect the interests of the U nited States. Throu g h a written agreement with the Foundation, the N ational P ark Service shall ensure that the operation of the land conveyed under subsection (a) is in accord- ance with National Park Service standards for preservation, mainte- nance, and interpretation. (f) A U T H ORI Z ATION O F A P PROPRIATIONS.—To assist with the operation of the historic site and interpretive center, there is author- i z ed to be appropriated $150 ,000 per year for a period not to e x ceed 10 years. SEC.34 3. L E WI S AND CLA RK NA T I O NAL H ISTORIC TRAIL E X TENSION. (a) D EFINITIONS.—In this section
(1) E ASTERN LE G A CY SITES.—The term ‘ ‘Eastern L egacy sites ’ ’ means the sites associated with the preparation or return phases of the Lewis and Clark expedition, commonly known as the ‘‘Eastern Legacy’’, including sites in Virginia, the District of Columbia, M aryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, W est Virginia, O hio, K entucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Missouri, and Illinois. This includes the routes followed by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, whether independently or together. ( 2 ) TRAIL.—The term ‘‘Trail’’ means the Lewis and Clark National H istoric Trail designated by section 5(a)( 6 ) of the National Trails System Act (16 U.S.C. 12 4 4(a)(6)). (b) SPECIAL R ESOURCE STUDY.— (1) IN GENERAL.—The Secretary shall complete a special resource study of the Eastern Legacy sites to determine— (A) the suitability and feasibility of adding these sites to the Trail
and ( B ) the methods and means for the protection and interpretation of these sites by the National Park Service, other Federal, State, or local government entities or private or non-profit organizations. (2) STUDY RE Q UIREMENTS.— (A) IN GENERAL.—The Secretary shall conduct the study in accordance with section 5(b) of the National Trails System Act (16 U.S.C. 1244(b)). (B) IMPACT ON TOURISM.—In conducting the study, the Secretary shall analyze the potential impact that the inclu- sion of the Eastern Legacy sites is likely to have on tourist visitation to the western portion of the trail. (c) REPORT.—Not later than 3 years after the date on which funds are made available to carry out this section, the Secretary shall submit to the Committee on Natural Resources of the House of Representatives and the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources of the Senate a report containing— (1) the results of the study; and (2) any recommendations of the Secretary.
