Ch. 929. 1886. 325 The Secretary of War is authorized and directed to appoint rm Board Board of engiof three engineers from the United States Army whose duty it shall be ”°°” *° ’°P°'* <>¤ to examine, in all their relations to commerce, the two improved water- ;£;‘}i;§;°i·°€F°’°‘ ways known as the Portage Lake and River Improvement Company Him Cg],;,,3,`;,°; Canal and the Lake Superior Slip-Canal Railway and Iron Company Canal and Lake (Jamal, being the improved harbors of refuge and the water communi S“P°**°' SMP U=¤· cation across Keweenaw Point, from Keweexmw Bay to Lake Superior, ML by way of Portage River and Lake, in the State of Michigan, with a. view to making the same a free passageway and harbors of refuge, to consider their value and all other matters connected with their usefulness to navigation, and which shall give information as to the expediency of the work and the desirability of their acquisition and improvement. The said board shall report to the Secretary of War, who shall lay its report before Congress at its next session, together with the views of himself and the Chief of Engineers of the United States Army thereon; and ten thousand dollars, or s0 much thereof as may be necessary, is hereby appropriated for this purpose. _ Improving Chippewa River, Wisconsin: Continuing improvement Chippewa River. from the Dalles Dam to its mouth, eighteen thousand seven hundred and fifty dollars. Improving Fox River, Wisconsin: Continuing improvement below Fox River. Montello, on the approved plan, fifty-six thousand two hundred and fifty dollars. And the Secretary of War is hereby directed to have the Survey m be examination and survey of the Wisconsin River from Portage to the ¤<>¤¤1>1<¢t9¤1 rw ¤<><»¤ mouth, now being made by a board of engineers, completed as soon as ““ Y""°*'°‘“’]°· practicable, and a report thereof made 011 or before the meeting of the next session of Congress. And the sum of six thousand dollars of the _ above appropriation, or so much thereof as may be necessary, may be expended at or near Portage City to prevent the overflow of the Wisconsin River into the Upper Fox River, so as to prevent injury to the Government works on Fox River; and this expenditure may be made separately, or, if deemed more economical by the Secretary of War, in adding to any protecting works which may be made by the State of Wisconsin. · - Improving Saint Croix River, Wisconsin and Minnesota: Continuing Saint.
