This provision for examination sha] not apply to teachers coming from the normal schools, or teachers bein advanced from the differ- Hvviw- ent classes in the grade schools: Provided, That no teacher or officer ‘ .,t€"°°°°° i°°°°m’ in the service of the public schools of the District of Columbia at the time of the passage of this Act shall, by the operation of this Act, be rrequired to take any examination,either mental or physical, to be continued in the service. The boards of examiners for carrying out the · above provisions with reference to examinations shall consist of the superintendent and two heads of departments of the white schools for the white teachers and of the superintendent and two heads of departments of the colored schools for colored teachers. The designation of such heads of departments for membership on these boar s to be ’ made by the board of education annually. w:;_¤gg¤¤¤¤¤ of Every new teacher at the time of his appointment shall be assigned to a class or grou by the board of education on the recommendation ments orpay. of the superintendent of schools, and shall receive for the first year the minimum pay of said class or group. The first year in Group A, class six, shall be probationary. For the purpose of this Act a model teacher shall be held to be a teacher of the first or second grade, or of the kindergarten, whose special aptitude for plrimary teaching makes it desirable to retain him in said grades with the pay of a higher grade. Teachers of classes one and two shall receive an annual increase of salary of twenty-five dollars for four years, or until the maximum is reached. Teachers of class three shall receive an annual increase of salary of twenty-five dollars for ten ears, or until the maximum is reached. Teachers of class four shall receive an annual increase of salary of thirty dollars for ten years, or until the maximum is reached. Teachers of class five shall receive an annual increase of salary of forty dollars for ten years, or until the maximum is reached. Teachers in Group A of class six, after the probationary year, shall receive an annual increase of salar of one hundred dollars for eight years; in Group B, of one hundredy dollars for three years. That principals of grade-school buildings shall receive for services rendered as such, in a drtron to their grade salary, the yearly sum of thirty dollars for each session room in the buildin . The term ‘session room " shall be held to designate a tdass room in which the regular work of a class of not less than twenty-five people is carried on. Principals of normal, high, and manual training schools shall receive a salary of two thousand dollars per annum, together with an annual increase of one hundred dollars for five years. All such principals shall be appointed at the minimum salary, and each shall have entire control o is school, both executive and educational, subject only in authority to the superintendent of schools for the white schools and to the colored assistant superintendent for the colored schools, to whom in each case he shall be directly responsible. That the salaxpy of the directors shall be as follows: Directors of drawing, physica culture, music, fifteen hundred dollars, with an annual increase of one hundred dollars for five years; domestic science, domestic art, and kindergartens shall receive a salary of one thousand five hundred dollars per annum with an annual increase of fifty dollars per year for five years; the assistant directors of drawing, physrcal culture, music, domestic science, domestic art, and kinder-
