M t H 1 1 Metallurgical research: For metallurgical research, including sw5,_° mg °° r°` alloy steels, fonmdry practice and standards for metals and sands; casting, rolling, forging, and the properties of aluminum alloys; prevention of corrosion of metals and alloys; development of metal substitutes, as for platinum; behavior of bearing metals; prepara- tion of metal speciHcations; investigation of new metallurgical processes and study of methods of conservation in metallurgical manufacture and products; investigation of materials used in the Reuww °¤¤*¤¤¤°¤*· construction of ra1ls, wheels, axles, and other railway equipment, and the cause of their failure; including personal services in the District of Columbia and in the Held, $48,140, of which amount not to exceed $44,600 may be expended for personal services in the District of Columbia. · Hi h t t High temperature investigations: For laboratory and Held inves- ms¤im£eii°£ir° um tigations of suitable methods of high temperature measurements and control in various industrial processes and to assist in making available directly to the industries the results of the bureau’s investi- gations in this Held, including personal services in the District of Columbia and in the Held, $9,740, of which amount not to exceed $8.460 may be expended for personal services in the District: of Columbia. Sonmd investigation: For the investigation of the principles of B°“°°'“““°‘““°”“ sound and their application to military and industrial purposes, including personal services in the District of Columbia and in the Held, $10,580, of which amount not to exceed $9,700 may be expended for personal services in the District of Columbia. Industrial research: For technical investigations in cooperation i¤£'§2a°§°8'§2l¤§?°°°r°h with the industries upon fundamental problems involved in indus- trial development following the war, with a view to assisting in the permanent establishment of the new American industries, including ersonal services in the District of Columbia and elsewhere, ¥172,320, of which amount not to exceed $165,000 may be expended for personal services in the District of Columbia. _ Tam mm mms. Testing railroad track and other scales: For investigation and sw. testing o railroad track scales,.elevator scales, and other scales used in weighing commodities for interstate shipments and to secure . equipment and assistance for testing the scales used by the Govern- ’ ment in its transactions with the public such as post oiiice, navy yard, and customhouse scales, and for the purpose of cooperating with the States in securing uniformity in the weights and measures laws and in the methods of inspection, including personal services in the District of Columbia and in the Held, $47,000, of which amount not to exceed $25,460 may be expended for personal services in the District of Columbia.
