PREVENTION OF CONTAGIOUS DISEASES For contingent expenses incident to the enforcement of the pro- visions of an Act to prevent the spread of contagious diseases in the District of Columbia, approved March 3, 1897 (29 Stat ., pp. 635-641), and an Act for the prevention of scarlet fever, diphtheria, measles, whooping cough, ch icken pox, e pidemi c cer ebrosp inal meningitis, and typhoid fever in the District of Columbia, approved February 9, 1907 (34 Stat ., pp . 889-890), and an Act to provide for registration of all cases of tuberculosis in the District of Columbia, for free examination of sputum in suspected cases, and for prevent- ing the spread of tuberculosis in said District of Columbia, approved May 13, 1908 (35 Stat ., pp . 126-127), under the direction of the health officer of said District, manufacture of serums, includ- ing their use in indigent cases, and for the prevention of infantile paralysis and other communicable diseases, and of an Act for the prevention of venereal diseases in the District of Columbia, and for other purposes, approved February 26, 1925 (43 Stat., pp . 1001- 1003), including salaries or compensation for personal services, when ordered in writing by the commissioners and necessary for the enforcement an d execution o f said Acts, and for the pr evention of such other communicable diseases as hereinbefore provided, pu r- chase and maintenance of necessary horses, wagons, and har ness, pur chase of refe rence books a nd medical jou rnals, and ma intenance of quarantine station and smallpox hospital, $45,000 : P rovid ed, That any bacteriologist employed under this appropriation may be assigned by the health officer to the bacteriological examination of milk and other dairy products and of the water supplies of dairy farms, and to such other sanitary work as in the judgment of the health officer will promote the public health, whether such examina- tions be or be not directly related to contagious diseases . For isolating wards for minor contagious diseases at Gar fiel d Memorial and Providence Hospitals, maintenance, $15,500 and $8,500, respectively, or so much thereof as in the opinion of the coin- missioners may be necessary ; in all, $24,000. For the m ainten ance o f a d ispens ary or disp ensari es for the tre atment of ind igent persons suffering fro m tuberculosi s and of indigent persons suffering from venereal diseases, including payment for personal services, rent, supplies, and contingent expenses, $24,200 : Provided, That the commissioners may accept such volun- teers services as they deem expedient in connection with the establishment and maintenance of the dispensaries herein author- ized : Provided further, That this shall not be construed to authorize the expenditure or the payment of any money on account of any such volunteer service . For maintenance of disinfecting service, including salaries or compe nsation for p ersonal servic es when order ed in writing by the com missioners an d necessary f or maintenance of said serv ice, and fo r purc hase a nd mai ntena nce of neces sary horses , wago ns, an d harne ss, and conti ngent expenses , $3,700 .
