CH. 232 . 1928 . disabled volunteer soldiers, in conformity with the Act approved August 27, 1888, as amended, including all classes of soldiers admis- sible to the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, $560,000 : Provided, That for any sum or sums collected in any manner from inmates of such State or Territorial homes to be used for the support of said homes a like amount shall be deducted from the aid herein provided for, but this proviso shall not apply to any State or Territorial home into which the wives or widows of soldiers are admitted and maintained . For every expenditure requisite for and incident to the maintenance All expenses . and operation, sanitation, and civil government of the Panama Canal and Canal Zone, including the following : Compensation of all objects specified . officials and employees ; foreign and domestic newspapers and peri- odicals ; law books not exceeding $500 ; textbooks and books of reference ; printing and binding, including printing of annual report ; rent and personal services in the District of Columbia ; pur- chase or exchange of typewriting, adding, and other machines ; purchase or exchange, maintenance, repair, and operation of motor- propelled and horse-drawn passenger-carrying vehicles ; claims for etc .laims for damages, damages to vessels passing through the locks of the Panama Canal, as authorized by the Panama Canal Act ; claims for losses of or damages to property arising from the conduct of authorized business operations ; claims for damages to property arising from the main- tenance and operation, sanitation, and civil government of the Panama Canal ; acquisition of land and land under water, as authorized in the Panama Canal Act ; expenses incurred in assem- Di sp teria n tc rvice° b lin gas sor tin storing, repairing, and selling material, machinery, andequipment heretore or herafter purchased or acquired for the construction of the Panama Canal which are unserviceable or no longer needed, to be reimbursed from the proceeds of such sales ; expenses incident to conducting hearings and examining estimates for appropriations on the Isthmus ; expenses incident to any emer- gency arising because of calamity by flood, fire, pestilence, or like character not foreseen or otherwise provided for herein ; traveling exp enses, when prescr ibed by the Gover nor o f the Panama Canal to pe rsons engaged in field work or traveling on official business ; and for such other expenses not in the United States as the Governor of the Panama Canal may deem necessary best to promote the maintenance and operation, sanitation, and civil government of the Panama Canal, all to be expended under the direction of the Gover nor of the Pa nama Canal and accounted fo r as follows For mainte nance and o perati on of the Pa nama Canal ; sa la ry of the governor, $10,000 ; purchase, inspection, delivery, handling, and storing of materials, supplies, and equipment for issue to all depart- ments of the Panama Canal, the Panama Railroad, other branches of the United States Government, and for authorized sales, payment in lump sums of not exceeding the amounts authorized by the Injury Compensation Act approved September 7, 1916, to alien cripples who are now a charge upon the Panama Canal by reason of injuries sustained while employed in the construction of the Panama anal ; in all, $6,832,000, including $250,000 for commencing the construction of a dam across the Chagres River at Alhajuela for the storage of water for use in the maintenance and operation of the Panama 54535•-29-pT 1--x-27 Traveling expenses.
