Grant at Appo- rArmy, e Co nfed erat e mattox Court House, in the State of Virginia, on April 9, 1865, and for the further purpose of honorin g those who engaged in this tremendous conflict, the Secretary of War is authorized and directed to acquire at the scene of said surrender approximately one acre of land, free of cost to the United States, at the above-named place, post, p .1305 . fence the parc el of land so acquired or demarcate its limits, and erect a monument thereon .
