435 necessary the wearing of same, maintenance, minor repairs, equip- ment, leases, fuel, lights, water, freight, transportation and travel, the maintenance, exchange, an d operation of motor trucks and pas- senger motor vehicles for official use in field work (including not to exceed $3,000 for the purchase of motor-propelled passenger- carrying vehicles) and one for use in connection with the adminis- trative work of the Puble ' Health Service in the District of Colum- bia, pur chas e of amb ulan ces, tra nspo rtat ion, car e, m aint enan ce, and do e pee,etranspD7 ~ treatment of l epers, includ ing transport ation to their homes ill the continental United States of recovered indigent leper patients, court costs, and other expenses incident to proceedings heretofore insane, etc . or hereafter taken for commitment of mentally incompetent persons to hospitals for the care and treatment of the insane, and reasonable burial expenses (not exceeding $100 for any patient dying in hos- pital), $4,915,000 : Provid ed, That the I mmigra tion Servic e shal l u ser ZOfs Ellis island permit the Public Health Service to use the hospitals at Ellis Island hospitals . Immigration Station for the care of Public Health Service patients free of expense for physical upkeep, but with a charge of actual cost of fuel, light, water, telephone, and similar supplies and services, to be covered into the proper Immigration Service appropriations

and money collected by the Immigration Service on account of hos- Re ceipts to be coo pital expenses of persons detained in hospitals of the Public Health ered into Treasury . Service under the immigration laws and regulations shall be covered into the Treasury as miscellaneous receipts : Provided further, That uses forbidden . no part of this sum shall be used for the quarantine service, the pre- vention of epidemics, or scientific work of the character provided for under the appropriations which follow . VI, s Vol.45,pp 107, 1088 . s .C ., Snpp .vlL,p . title 18, sees . 751, 752), and amounts received under the provisions 468 v , of sections 9 and 12 of the Act approved January 19, 1929 (U.S.C., Supp . VI, title 21, sees . 229, 232), shall be covered into the Treasury as miscellaneous receipts . Quarantine service : For maintenance and ordinary expenses, Qua rantine serv ice . exclusive of pay of officers and employees, of United States quaran- tine stations, including the exchange, maintenance, repair, and oper- ation of motor-propelled passenger-carrying vehicles for official use in field work and not to exceed $3,500 for the purchase of motor- propelled passenger-carrying vehicles, $322,150 . Prevention of epidemics : To enable the President, in case only of de ic s! ° of e pi- threatened or actual epidemic of infectious or contagious disease , to aid State and local boards or otherwise in his discretion, in pre- venting and suppressing the spread of the same, and in such emer- gency in the execution of any quarantine laws which may be then in force, $199,718, including the purchase of newspapers and clip- pings from newspapers containing information relating to the prevalence of disease and the public health . Field investigations : For investigations of diseases of man and Field investigations . conditions influencing the propagation and spread thereof, including sanitation and sewage, and the pollution of navigable streams and lakes of the United States, including personal service, and including the maintenance, repair, and operation of motor-propelled passen- ger-car rying v ehicles for o fficial use in field work, and not to ex ceed 3Soin original .
