FOREST SERVICE SALARIES AND GENERAL EXPENSES Vehicles. Forest Service. General expenses. To enable the Secretary of Agriculture to experiment and to make Experiments, etc• and continue investigations and reort on forestry, national forests, forest fires, and lumbering, but no- part of this appropriation shall be used for any experiment or test made outside the jurisdiction of 8ta Restricted to United the United States ; to advise the owners of woodlands as to the proper care of the same ; to investigate and test American timber and timber trees and their uses, and methods for the preservative treatment of timber ; to s eek, thr ough inv esti gati ons and the plan ting of nati ve and foreign species, suitable trees for the treeless regions ; to erect necessary buildings : Provided, That the cost of any building pur- crotioi3 b u i l d i n g s t chased, erected, or as improved, exclusive of the cost of constructing a water-supply or sanitary system and of connecting the same with any such building, and exclusive of the cost of any tower upon which a lookout house may be erected, shall not exceed $2,500 ; to pay all tion ro te rig : etc ., na- expenses necessary to protect, administer, and improve the national fore sts, inc ludi ng t ree plan ting in the forest reserves to prevent erosion, drift, surface wash, and soil waste and the formation of floods, and including the payment of rewards under regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture for information leading to the arrest and conviction for violation of the laws and regulations relating to fires in or near national forests, or for the unlawful taking of, or injury to, Government property ; to ascertain the natural conditions upon and utilize the national forests, to transport and care for fish Ca re of fish and and game supplied to stock the national forests or the waters therein ; game . t o employ agents, clerks , assi stants, and ot her la bor req uired i n prac - tical forestry and in the administration of national forests in the city of Washington and elsewhere ; to collate, digest, report, and illustrate the results of experiments and investigations made by the Fo re st S er vi ce ; to purchas e nece ssary s upplies , appa ratus, office fix- supplies, e t c , tures, law books, reference and technical books and technical journals for offi cers of the Fore st S ervi ce s tati oned out side of Wash ingt on, and for medical supplies and services and other assistance necessary for the imme diat e re lief of arti sans , la bore rs, and othe r em ploy ees engaged in any hazardous wo rk under the Forest Service : Provide d further, That the appropriations for the work of the Forest Service w arehou se ma inte- shall be available for meeting the expenses of warehouse maintenance nance . and the procurement, care, and handling of supplies and materials stored therein for distribution to projects under the supervision of the Forest Service and for sale and distribution to other Govern- ment activities, the cost of such supplies and materials, including the cost of supervision, transportation, and handling, to be reim- bursed to appr opriations cu rrent at the time additiona l supplies and materials are procured for warehouse stocks from the appro- priations chargeable with the cost of stock issued ; to pay freight, exp ress, telepho ne, and teleg raph charges ; fo r el ectr ic l ight and power, fuel, gas, ice, and washing towels, and official traveling and other necessary expenses, including traveling expenses for legal and fi scal officers while performing Forest Service work ; and for rent Outside rent . outside of the District of Columbia, as follows : General administrative expenses : For necessary expenses for gen- Ch ief For est er and eral administrative purposes, including the salary of the Chief For- office personnel . este r and o ther p ersonal servic es in the Dis trict o f Colu mbia, $ 258,092 . 86637'-34-31
