Testing fuel : To conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic inve stigations concernin g the mini ng, prepar ation, tre atment, an d use of mineral fuels, and for investigation of mineral fuels belong- ing to or for the use of the United States, with a view to their most efficient utilization ; to recommend to various departments su ch changes in selection and use of fuel as may result in g reater economy, and upon request of the Director of the Bureau of the Budget, to investigate the fuel-burning equipment in use by or proposed for any of the departments, establishments, or institutions of the United States in the District of Columbia, $185,400, of which amount not to exceed $27,600 may be expended for personal services in the District of Columbia ; Mineral mining investigations : For inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning the mining, preparation, treat- ment, and utilization of ores and mineral substances, other than fue ls, wit h a view to imp rov ing heal th cond itio ns and incr eas ing safety, efficiency, economic development ., and conserving resources through the prevention of waste in the mining, quarrying, metal- lurgical, and other mineral industries ; to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries ; and including all equipment, supplies, expenses of travel and subsistence, and the purchase, not to exceed $12,000, including exchange, operation, maintenance, and rep air of mo tor- prop elle d pa sseng er-c arry ing vehi cles for offi cial use in field work, including not to exceed $18,800 for personal services in the District of Columbia, $288,860 : Provided, That no part of this appr opriation may be exp ended for an investi gation in behalf of any private party ; Oil and gas investigations : For inquiries and investigations and diss emi nati on o f i nfor mati on conc erni ng the mini ng, pre para tio n, treatment, and utilization of petroleum and natural gas, including economic conditions affecting the industry, with a view to economic development and conserving resources through the prevention of wa ste
