BUREAU OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS SALARIES AND EXPENSES For the employment of such persons and means in the city of Wash- ington and elsewhere as may be necessary in conducting investigations, experiments, and demonstrations, either independently or in coopera- tion with public or private agencies, organizations, or individuals, as follows: General administrative expenses: For necessary expenses for gen- eral administrative purposes, including personal services in the Dis- trict of Columbia, $88,900. Economic investigations: For acquiring and diffusing useful information among the people of the United States, and for aiding in formulating programs for authorized activities of the Department of Agriculture, relative to agricultural production, distribution, land utilization, and conservation in their broadest aspects, including farm management and practice, utilization of farm and food products, pur- chasing of farm supplies, farm population and rural life, farm labor, farm finance, insurance and taxation, adjustments in production to probable demand for the different farm and food products; land ownership and values, costs, prices and income in their relation to agriculture, including causes for their variations and trends, $839,100: Provided, That the Secretary may transfer to this appropriation from the funds available for authorized activities of the Department of Agriculture, such sums as may be necessary for aiding in formulat- ing programs for such authorized activities, including expenditures for employment of persons and means in the District of Columbia and elsewhere. Total, salaries and expenses, Bureau of Agricultural Economics, $928,000, of which amount not to exceed $803,858 may be expended for personal services in the District of Columbia.
