Public Law 98-306 98th Congress An Act To amend the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965, and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, SHORT TITLE SECTION 1. This Act may be cited as the "National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act Amendments of 1983".

TECHNICAL AMENDMENT

SEC. 2. The National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 951 et seq.) is amended by striking out the first section thereof and inserting in lieu thereof the following: "TITLE I—ENDOWMENTS FOR ARTS AND HUMANITIES "SHORT TITLE "SECTION 1. This title may be cited as the 'National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965'.". DECLARATION OF PURPOSE

SEC. 3. Section 2 of the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 951) is amended— (1) by redesignating paragraphs (6) and (7) as paragraphs (7) and (8), respectively, and (2) by inserting after paragraph (5) the following new paragraph: "(6) that museums are vital to the preservation of our cultural heritage and should be supported in their role as curator of our national consciousness;". "

ENTITIES WITHIN FOUNDATION

SEC. 4. (a) Section 4(a) of the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 953(a)) is amended— (1) by striking out "and a Federal Council" and inserting in lieu thereof ", a Federal Council', and (2) by inserting ", and an Institute of Museum Services" before "(hereinafter established)". (b) Section 4(b) of the National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C. 953(b)) is amended by inserting ", and for institutions which preserve the cultural heritage of the United States after "United States".
