Photoplay was one of the first American film fan magazines, founded in Chicago in 1911, and edited for the first 20 years by James R. Quirk. In 1921, Photoplay established one of the first annual movie awards, The Photoplay Magazine Medal of Honor, voted for by the readership of the magazine, although this faded in importance when the Oscars became established. In the 1920s and 30s it was considered one of the most significant magazines in its field. It ceased publication in 1980.
