Photoplay was one of the first American film fan magazines, founded in Chicago in 1911, and edited for the first 20 years by James R. Quirk. In 1921, Photoplay established one of the first annual movie awards, the The Photoplay Magazine Medal of Honor, voted for by the readership of the magazine. The magazine ceased publication in 1980.
