Foundational context and competing ideologies (pre-2002)
[edit]- The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) (1968) Iran under the Shah was a signatory before the 1979 Revolution brought the Islamic Republic to power. Israel of four countries—along with India, Pakistan, and South Sudan—that have never signed the treaty. Israel maintains a policy of deliberate ambiguity, neither confirming nor denying the existence of a nuclear weapons program.
