1st Infantry Lineage[edit]

First US 1st Infantry Regiment[edit]

  • Constituted 3 June 1784 in the Regular Army as the First American Regiment to consist of companies from Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania
  • Organized August-September 1784 in Pennsylvania and New Jersey (New York and Connecticut companies organized in 1785)
  • Redesignated 3 March 1791 as the 1st Infantry
  • Redesignated 31 October 1796 as the 1st Infantry

Second US 1st Infantry Regiment[edit]

  • Relieved 8 March 1919 from assignment to the 13th Division
  • Relieved 16 October 1939 from assignment to the 2d Division and assigned to the 6th Division (later redesignated as the US 6th Infantry Division)
  • Inactivated 10 January 1949 in Korea
  • Activated 4 October 1950 at Fort Ord, California
  • Relieved 3 April 1956 from assignment to the 6th Infantry Division
  • Relieved 15 May 1958 from assignment to the United States Military Academy and reorganized as a parent regiment under the Combat Arms Regimental System
