Notes from main page[edit]

Bricstan was a Twelfth Century monk from Chatteris in East Anglia who, according to the manuscript, was falsely imprisoned by "a servant of the devil". Following a vision of St Ethelreda and St. Benedict he was released at the request of Queen Matilda of Scotland, wife of King Henry I of England c.1115-6. The Historia Ecclesiastica by the Chronicler Orderic Vitalis (1075–c. 1142) is one of three contemporary accounts of the incident.[1][2]

  1. Originally in Latin, translated by Thomas Forester M.A.
  2. Lois L. Huneycutt, Matilda of Scotland: a study in medieval queenship (Woodbridge: Boydell Press) 91.
