Notes about how we're proofreading[edit]

User:SuckitHamilton and I have been working on this proofreading project, and we've sort of developed some standard operating procedures for some things we run into while proofreading. I thought I'd compile a list here for anyone who wants to jump in and help.

  • We are including links to Wikipedia. Generally we've been linking things such as people, political groups, events, treaties, etc. We will link only the first instance of the word in a chapter.
  • We are including links to Wiktionary. We've only been linking underlined words such as "modus vivendi." We will link only the first instance of the word in a chapter.
  • We are including links to Wikisource. We've only been linking to pages that are bluelinked. We will link only the first instance of the word in a chapter.
  • We have not been preserving indenting at the beginning of a paragraph. Although there is some extra indenting in cases such as this, we are not preserving it. We have been retaining indentation of the entire paragraph as per usual.
  • We have been using {{Pent}} for endnotes. See the template documentation.
  • We have been preserving handwritten notes using {{popup note}}.
  • Images attributed to outside sources (even those contracted by the U.S. Government, such as on page ii are assumed to be non-free. They should be removed from the .djvu file and replaced in the transcription with {{Image removed}}.

I plan to add to this list as we go along. GorillaWarfare (talk) 19:26, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Substitutions[edit]

I use two sets of find-and-replace regular expressions in AutoWikiBrowser. Though some of them may be specific to quirks with ABBYY Finereader's OCR, some of them may be useful for others.

The first set is for the first pass-through. The ones that add {{Pent}} templates have to be updated whenever you switch to a new section.

5^ 54 N N N

\n(\d\d?)\.\s? |-valign="top"

The second set is for a final check. The ones that say "NO PAGE #" and similar should be replaced with the actual number; they're just for drawing my attention to missing details.

questions[edit]

  • if you could elaborate on the endnotes and {{pent}} that would be helpful.
  • if you could buildout the index with the redlinks, it would make it easier for proofreaders , who may be less adept at the coding, might even get on a proofread of month. Slowking4Farmbrough's revenge 22:08, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
