  1. சிங்கம் பசித்தால் தேரையைப் பிடிக்குமா?
    When hungry will a lion prey on frogs?
  2. சிங்கம் பசிக்கு ஆனையையே தேடிக் கொல்லும்; ,அதுபோல், பெரியோர் அக்கறைப்பட்டால் பெரிய காரியத்தையேச் செய்வார்கள்.
    When lions are hungry they go in search of elephants to prey on, in like manner, when the great are reduced to poverty they achieve great things-to relieve their wants.

    The manner of Chittan is like the manner of Siva, the manner of religious mendicant is like itself.
  10. சித்திரை மாதத்திற் செல்வன் பிறந்தால் சீரும் சிறப்பும் கெடும்.
    If a son is born in Chittirai-April-the state and reputation of the family will be ruined.
  11. சித்திரை மாதத்திற் பிறந்த சீர் கேடனும் இல்லை, ஐப்பசி மாதத்திற் பிறந்த அதிர்ஷ்டவானும் இல்லை.
    None born in Chittirai-April-is unfortunate, none born in Aipasi-October-is fortunate.
  12. சித்தி பெறாத மருந்தும் மருந்தோ பெற்றுப் படையாத பிள்ளையும் பிள்ளையோ?
    Is that medicine which does not take effect, is that which a woman has not brought forth and reared, her child?
  13. சித்திராங்கி பொம்மா சின்ன வெங்கிட்டம்மா.
    Little Vengadamma is a hypocritical lady.
  14. சிநேகம் செய்யுமுன் ஆராய்தல் செய்,செய்தபின் ஐயப்படாதே.
    Form friendships after due deliberation, having done so do not give place to doubt.

    How long will the nose last that breaks off on blowing?
  17. சிப்பியிலே விழுந்த மழைத் துளி முத்தாகும்; அதுபோல, நல்லவர்க்குச் செய்த உதவி நிலைநிற்கும்.
    A rain drop that falls on an oyster-shell will become a pearl, so a benefit conferred on the virtuous will endure.

  25. சிவியானுக்கு அடிமைப்பட்டால் காவவும் வேண்டும் சுமக்கவும் வேண்டும்.
    If subject to a palanquin bearer, one must bear both palanquins and burdens.

    He will beat out gold even thinner than a feather.
  27. சிறகு இல்லாப் பறவைபோல.
    Like a bird without wings.
  28. சிறகு பறிகொடுத்த பறவைபோல.
    Like a bird deprived of its wings.
  29. சிறியாரோடு இணங்காதே சேம்புக்குப் புளி விட்டு மசியாதே.
    Do not associate with the mean, do not macerate chambu greens with acid.
  30. சிறியார்க்கு இனியதைக் காட்டாதே சேம்புக்குப் புளி விட்டு ஆக்காதே.
    Do not offer sweets to children, nor mix acid with chambu greens.
  31. சிறியோர் செய்த சிறு பிழை எல்லாம் பெரியோர் ஆனவர் பொறுப்பது கடனே.
    It is the duty of the great to forgive the faults of inferiors.
  32. சிறியோர் எல்லாம் சிறியர் அல்ல.
    All that are little are not inferiors.
  33. சிறுகச் சிறுகத் தின்றால் மலையையும் தின்னலாம்.
    If you eat little by little, you may consume a mountain.
  34. சிறுகக் கட்டிப் பெருக வாழு.
    Build a small house, and live thriftily.
  35. சிறுக விதைத்தவன் சிறுக அறுப்பான்.
    He that sows little will reap little.
  36. சிறு குழிகள் கொஞ்சம் தண்ணீரால் நிரம்பும்.
    But little water is required to fill a small hole.

    Thia refers to a species whose chirp is not regarded in augury.
  51. சிற்றின்பம் எண்ணார் மற்றின்பம் கண்டவர்.
    Those who have tasted real happiness, will not regard inferior pleasures.
  52. சிற்றுணர்வோர் என்றும் சிலுசிலுப்பர்.
    Persons of little learning are always talkative.

    Will an extended comedy be performed in a mere hamlet?
