மா.

  1. மா இருக்கிற மணத்தைப் போல் அல்லவோ கூழ் இருக்கிற குணம்.
    As is the flour so is the gruel.
  2. மா உண்டானால் பணிகாரம் சுடலாம்.
    If there be flour, cakes may be baked.
  3. மா ஏற மலை ஏறும்.
    The accretion of a particle to a mountain increases its size.
  4. மாடு திருப்பினவன் அர்ச்சுனன்?
    He who drove back the cows was Arjuna.
  5. மாடு தின்னிக்கு வாக்குச் சுத்தம் உண்டா?
    Is a beef-eater accustomed to decent words?
  6. மாடு முக்கிவர வீடு நக்கிவரும்.
    When cows return fatigued the household will suffer want.
  7. மாடு மேய்க்காமற் கெட்டது, பயிர் பார்க்காமற் கெட்டது.
    Without pasture cows die; without care vegetation perishes.
  8. மாட்டின் வாழ்க்கை மூட்டையிலே.
    A bull's term of existence is in his sack.
  9. மாட்டுக்குப் பெயர் பெரிய கடா என்று.
    A cow is otherwise called a large he-goat.

  10. மாட்டைப் புல் உள்ள தலத்திலும், மனுஷனைச் சோறு உள்ள தலத்திலும் இருக்க ஒட்டாது.
    It will not allow the cow to be content in its pasture, nor a man with his boiled rice.
  11. மாட்டை மேய்த்தானாம் கோலைப் போட்டானாம்.
    It is said that he tended the cows and threw away the goad.
  12. மாணிக்கக் காலுக்கு மாற்றுக்கால் இருக்கிறது.
    There is a spare leg, for the one made of a ruby.
  13. மாதம் காதவழி மானாகத் துள்ளுவான்.
    He will leap like a deer, ten miles in a month.
  14. மாதா செய்தது மக்களுக்கு.
    The faults of a mother are visited on her children.
  15. மாதா மனம் எரிய வாழாள் ஒரு நாளும்.
    Whilst her mother’s heart is wounded, she will not prosper even for a day.
  16. மாத்திரை தப்ப மிதித்தால், கோத்திரம் கூறப்படும்.
    If one exceed his limit, his ancestry will be exposed.
  17. மாப் புளிக்கிறது எல்லாம் பணிகாரத்துக்கு நலம்.
    The more the flour is leavened the better for the cakes.
  18. மாப் பொன் இருக்க மக்களைச் சாவக் கொடுப்பேனா?
    Whilst I possess a particle of gold, will I allow my children to die?
  19. மா மறந்த கூழுக்கு உப்பு ஒரு கேடா?
    Does the absence of salt spoil gruel made without flour?
  20. மாமி ஒட்டினாலும் பானை ஒட்டாது.
    Though a mother-in-law may be reconciled, the broken pieces of an earthen pot cannot be reunited.

  21. மாமியார் உடை குலைந்தால் வாயாலும் சொல்லக்கூடாது, கையாலும் காட்டக்கூடாது.
    If the dress of a mother-in-law be out of order, it must not be spoken of, or pointed at by the hand.
  22. மாமியார் உடைத்தால் மண்கலம், மருமகள் உடைத்தால் பொன்கலம்.
    If broken by the mother-in-law it is an earthen vessel, if by the daughter-in-law, it is a golden vessel.
  23. மாமியாரைக் கண்டு மருமகன் நாணுகிறதுபோல.
    As the son-in-law is embarrassed in the presence of his mother-in-law.
  24. மாமியார் செத்த ஆறாம் மாதம் மருமகள் கண்ணில் கண்ணீர் வந்ததாம்.
    It is said that six months after the death of the mother-in-law, a tear came into the eye of the daughter-in-law.
  25. மாமியார் செத்து மருமகள் அழுகிறதுபோல.
    Like the wailing of a daughter-in-law, on account of the death of her mother-in-law.
  26. மாமியாரும் சாகாளோ மனக்கவலையும் தீராதோ?
    Will my mother-in-law never die, will my sorrows never end?
  27. மாமியார் வீடு மகா சௌக்கியம்.
    The house of the mother-in-law is very comfortable.
  28. மாயக்காரர் எல்லாம் பாதகர், மாறுபாட்டுக்காரர் எல்லாம் சாதகர்.
    All impostors are perfidious villains, all double-dealers are practically so.
  29. மாயக்காரன் பேயிற் கடையே.
    A hypocrite is worse than a demon.
  30. மாரி அல்லது காரியம் இல்லை.
    Without rain nothing can be effected.

  31. மாரி காலத்தில் பதின் கல மோரும், கோடை காலத்தில் ஒரு படி நீரும் சரி.
    Ten kalams of buttermilk in the wet season, are worth one measure of water in the hot season.
  32. மார் அடித்த கூலி மடிமேலே.
    The hire for beating their breasts is at once on the lap.
  33. மார்பு சரிந்தால் வயிறு தாங்க வேண்டும்.
    If the breasts be pendent, they must be supported by the stomach.
  34. மார்பைத் தட்டி மனதிலே வை.
    Touch your breast, and keep it in your mind.
  35. மாலை குளித்து மனையில் புகும், தன் மனையில் ஆசையும் சேர்க்காது.
    In the evening a crow bathes before it goes to its nest, and will not admit a stranger.
    Many Natives attribute to the crow five peculiarities of wich that indicated in this proverb is one. The peculiarities, or habits are as follows:—(a) Going forth very early of a morning. (b) Never being seen to pair. (c) Eating together. (d) Bathing before going to their nest. (e) Warning their companions of apparent danger.
  36. மாலை சுற்றிப் பெண் பிறந்தால் மாமனுக்கு ஆகாது.
    For a girl to be born with a garland round her neck is ominous to her maternal uncle.
    This மாலை may be either the navel-string or a thin membrane that covers the head, and which, sometimes decends like a ring, to the neck, it is then called மாலை, if otherwise முகமூடி a veil.
  37. மாலை சுற்றிப் பிறந்த பிள்ளை மாமனுக்கு ஆகாது.
    If a child be born with its navel string round its neck, it is ominous to its uncle.
  38. மாவிலும் ஒட்டலாம் மாங்காயிலும் ஒட்டலாம்.
    A share in the dough, a share in the mangos.

  39. மாவுக்கு தக்க பணிகாரம்.
    Cakes proportioned to the flour.
  40. மாவைத் தின்றால் அப்பம் இல்லை.
    If you eat the dough you will not get your ‘'share of'’ cake.
  41. மாற்றிலே வளைவது மரத்திலே வளையுமா?
    Will the tree be pliable because the sapling was so?
  42. மாற்றானுக்கு இடம் கொடேல்.
    Yield not to a foe.
  43. மானத்தின்மேலே கண்ணும் மாப்பிள்ளைமேலே சிந்தையும்.
    The eye is on the heavens, the mind is on the bridegroom.
  44. மானத்தை வில்லாய் வளைப்பான் மணலைக் கயிறாய்த் திரிப்பான்.
    He is able to bend the sky as a bow, and he can twist ropes of sand.
  45. மானம் அழியில் உயிர் காவலா?
    When honour is perishing, is life worth preservation?
  46. மானம் பெரிதோ, சீவன் பெரிதோ?
    Is honour great, or is life?
  47. மானிலம் சிலரைத் தாங்கேன் என்னுமோ?
    Does the spacious earth refuse to uphold any one?
  48. மானுக்கு ஒரு புள்ளி ஏறி என்ன, குறைந்து என்ன?
    What matters it whether the deer has more or fewer spots?
  49. மானுஷியம் இல்லாதவன் மனுஷப் பதர்.
    Among mankind one destitute of humanity is as chaff.
  50. மான் கண்ணிலும் அழகு விரைவிலும் விரைவு.
    More beautiful than the eye of a deer, more rapid ‘'than its'’ speed.
  51. மான் கூட்டத்தில் புலி புகுந்ததுபோல.
    As the tiger sprang on a herd of deer.
