WILLARD, Joseph (1738-1804). An American clergyman and educator, born in Biddeford, Maine, a great-grandson of Samuel Willard (q.v.), who was acting president of Harvard, 1701-07. He graduated at Harvard, 1765, and was tutor till 1772, when he became colleague pastor of the Congregational Church at Beverly, Mass. He was president of Harvard, 1781-1804. Among his published writings are several sermons; a Latin address on the death of Washington; and scientific papers in the Memoirs of the American Academy and the Philosophical Transactions.
