PATRIOTIC!
In a village, not a thousand miles from the east end of Long Island, resides an individual who executes the office of Town Clerk. When, under the last call of the President, it became necessary for the Town officers to take the initiative in raising their quota, it became the duty of the Clerk to issue notices, in due form, of the special Town Meeting. Accordingly the bulletins were graced with the following "Notis:"
"A special Town Meeting will be held on , at the Town House, to take measures to keep from the war the men who are drafted."
Now, the character of our friend for loyalty is like that of Cæsar's wife, yet the village wag could not lose the opportunity, and accordingly he appended the following "lines:"
"Ye friends of Jeff Davis, Secessionists all,
Rejoice, when to you the good news shall be wafted;
No more, to raise soldiers, Town Meetings we call,
But—"To keep from the war the men who are drafted!"
Rejoice, when to you the good news shall be wafted;
No more, to raise soldiers, Town Meetings we call,
But—"To keep from the war the men who are drafted!"
