A.S.T.C., Flagstaff Receives North Central Recognition
A.S.T.C. Given Equal Rating with the Leading Colleges and Universities
This college no longer is classed with schools of secondary rating, but is now an accredited member of the North Central Association of Universities and Secondary Schools. The message, stating the official rating, was received from Dr. Gammage late Thursday evening. He had been in Chicago for three days, representing this institution, and attending the executive meetings of the association.
Arizona State Teachers College is the only teachers college which was given this recognition this year in the United States, and is the only teachers college in the entire southwest which now holds this high honor. This places Arizona State on par with the leading colleges and universities in the country, and will make the transfer of credits an easy matter.
The inspector for the North Central Association, Dr. F. C. O'Brien of the University of Kansas, was in Flagstaff about a month ago, and spent some time viewing the college from such standpoints as faculty qualifications, curriculum, and other important details.
The State University at Tucson is the only other Arizona institution having this high rating.
Probably one of the greatest advantages obtained by this action is the fact that students granted degrees by Flagstaff are automatically given rating to teach in any high school. This did not apply under the American Association rating. Arizona State Teachers College was accredited by the American Association of Teachers Colleges two years ago and since that time has been working for the recognition just received.
Probably the most important factor which gave the school this rating was the fact that the majority of the teachers at Flagstaff have doctor's degrees. Five of the faculty are now away on leaves of absence for advanced study. Not the least important factor, according to Dr. O'Brien, is the splendid library which A. S. T. C. boasts.
