Mr. G. V. Benson
Mr. George Vere Benson, who died on Thursday at Lewes, was for 28 years coroner for East Sussex and the Borough of Eastbourne, and retired in 1927. The son of Dr. Charles Benson, he was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he was Vice-Chancellor's prizeman for English prose. He went up to Downing College, Cambridge, and took his degree as wrangler in 1873. He was also a barrister of the Middle Temple and a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. From 1894 to 1899 he was deputy coroner for West Middlesex, and in 1899 he was appointed coroner for East Sussex. From 1908 to 1910 he was vice-president of the Coroners' Society of England and Wales. In his younger days he was fond of cricket, football, cycling, and rowing, and he also travelled extensively. He contributed to the "Encyclopedia of the Laws of England," "The Dictionary of National Biography," and other publications. He married a daughter of the late Mr. Daniel Batemen, of St. Petersburg and Auckland, New Zealand.
