This first volume of Chōsen fuzoku no kenkyū (Studies on Korean Shamanism) was published in 1937 in Seoul by Japanese sociologists Chijō Akamatsu and Takashi Akiba. The volume is a sourcebook of Korean shamanistic hymns from three main locations: Seoul, Osan (a town fifty kilometers south of Seoul), and the southern island of Jeju. Chijō and Takashi transcribed the Korean original on the top half of every page and provided a Japanese translation on the bottom. Wikisource's translation is based on the Korean, with recourse to the Japanese when the original is unclear. Although Chōsen fuzoku no kenkyū has been criticized for failing to transcribe the full ritual context of each hymn, it is of incalculable value in the study of Korean shamanism because many of its works are attested nowhere else.
