Transcribing Once a Week (magazine)

Style guide[edit]

Article Beginnings[edit]

Short, simple titles[edit]

N.B. In digital format, this style of title is used for all titles that fit on one line, even if in the print magazine it is broken into multiple lines and therefore does not there have a rule between title and text.

Poems[edit]

In the magazine, some poems float quotation marks and some don't; this has been standardized so that {{fqm}} is always used.

It is encouraged to wrap especially long poem lines in the template {{hin}} so that lines wrap with a hanging indent when the window is narrowed.

Images[edit]

I’ve been trying to make sure that all the images are scaled the same relative to each other. To do that, I assume that the full width of the print-page of the original represents 500px digitally. Full-width images are 500px and others are a percent of that as in the original. I have also tried to scale other things that have a width (music scores, some tables, side-by-side text-and-image, etc.) so that they fit nicely into a column 500px wide. Nonetheless, a few pages have had to have images, or image plus text combinations, wider than that. Levana Taylor (talk) 01:22, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Levana Taylor: I was wondering if you could write about how you process the images for OAW? I am thinking this could be a good candidate for theMonthly_Challenge if the images are already processed and linked in the Index Discussion.Zoeannl (talk) 03:44, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The template {{large image}} creates an image of a specified size which shrinks if the window is narrower than that. Centered images of 300px (60%) wide or greater should use this template, with the standard caption format.

Images less than 300px wide should usually float within the text, using {{Img float}}.

Centered, uncaptioned image[edit]

{{large image|[[File:FILENAME|WIDTH(PX)|center]]|max-width=WIDTH(PERCENT)|style=margin: 25px auto;}}

Centered, captioned image[edit]

<div style="margin-top:25px;margin-bottom:20px">
{{large image|[[File:FILENAME|WIDTH(PX)|center]]|max-width=WIDTH(PERCENT)}}
{{c|{{fs90|CAPTION}}}}
</div>

Image floating left or right[edit]

{{Img float|
 | file   = FILENAME
 | width  = WIDTH(PX)
 | align  = right or left
 | cap    = {{fs90|CAPTION}}
 | style  = margin-top:20px; margin-bottom:10px;
}}

Other Notes[edit]

All quotation marks are curly/“smart.”

"Mc" names use the template {{Mc}}.

The magazine prints decimal points as middle dots (·) but that is not followed in this wiki; they are represent by ordinary decimal points. Likewise, in some places times are printed with the hour and minutes separated by a middle or top dot, and this has also been digitally represented by a period.

It is a peculiarity of this magazine’s typeface that there are no italic numerals. When a numeral occurs in an italicized phrase or date, it has been italicized in the digital version: no need to imitate the print typeface’s limitation. Levana Taylor (talk) 23:58, 31 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hyphenated words[edit]

The editorial practice of this magazine hyphenates some compound words that are not usually hyphenated in modern standard practice. The commonest ones are to-day, to-night, to-morrow, up-stairs, down-stairs, bed-room and other rooms, south-west and other directions. A complete list is at Wikisource:Wikiproject Once a Week/List of hyphenated words.

Layout[edit]
