This page hosts requests to stewards and global renamers for a username change across the entire Wikimedia network. Please read the instructions before posting a request.

This is also the page where the usurpation of inactive accounts can be requested.

Instructions[edit]

SUL finalization[edit]

If you are requesting a merge of a global account with one or more unconnected local accounts as part of finalizing your single unified login (SUL) username, please specify which wikis and accounts you want to merge into your global account. These accounts were typically named "account name~wikiname". Please note that we can only merge a local account into a global account when the global account has no edits on the same wiki as the local account.

Making a request for your own account[edit]

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available. You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests[edit]

Account renames are not private, once renamed many links from the old username to the new username will be permanently made. The reason submitted on the rename form (Special:GlobalRenameRequest) is private, and only visible by the renamers. Additional information that needs to be made in private may be sent using this direct wiki-email interface while logged-in.


Simple rename requests[edit]

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications[edit]

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username and requests should be signed by the requesting user.
Please note: Per standard procedure, accounts with valid edits are not usurped, and the target account must be notified by renamer at least one month before usurpation.

thx. @DreamRimmer @Hide on Rosé what do you think about this usurpation, considering the fact that Anpang01 is maybe one of many accounts and we don't get convincing answers? Noting that the requester is blocked on fawiki. I am not sure if any of their cited edits need to be deleted, but I can see that both accounts belong to the same person. @TenWhile6 Sorry to disturb you, but I'm proposing to change the target name to Zzzs. The initial name can be easily impersonated due to the letters, something that I didn't take into account while choosing. The new name might look easy to impersonate, but the number of similar named accounts makes impersonation more difficult. Also, the target account has zero edits. WildMouse76, you know that the usurpation process has already started once I informed the user? Okay, technically I can now change the target name and the process starts again, but the Global rename policy states: The new name is carefully selected. Trying to change the target name two days after the initial request does not look like a careful selected name.

Target user is not registered. Conflict: The requesting user got blocked by Jules* ten years ago on frwiki (indef) with the reason Abus d'utilisation de comptes multiples (faux-nez) which means Abuse of using multiple accounts (spoofing). Done. Jules* I've decided to renamed the account. There is a valid reason, the request (even as IP) looks very convincing and the blocking sysop had nothing to object.
