Forster, William Edward, P.C. 9 Dec., 1868 (e), and 5 May, 1880 (i), created D.C.L. 18 June, 1879, and LL.D. Aberdeen 1876, M.P. Bradford Feb., 1861, to Nov., 1885, Bradford (central division) Nov., 1885, until April, 1886, F.R.S., F.R.G.S., under secretary of state for Colonies 1865-6, vice-president Committee of Council on Education 1868-74 (with Cabinet rank 1870), chief secretary Ireland April, 1880, to May, 1882, lord rector of Aberdeen University 1875-8 (son of William Forster by Anna, sister of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, Bart.). Mr. Forster's father, though a minister of the Society of Friends, was originally a land surveyor; his father and grandfather were schoolmasters at Tottenham, and it is believed that his great grandfather was also a schoolmaster at Chester-le-Street, co. Durham; he was born 11 July, 1818, died 5 April, 1886.
