Phillips, John, 1s. John, of Marden, Wilts, gent. Magdalen Coll., matric. 25 Oct., 1853, aged 52; M.A. by decree 27 Oct., 1853, created D.C.L. 13 June 1866, hon. fellow 1868-74, keeper of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society's Museum 1827, F.G.S. 1828, assistant-secretary British Association 1832, F.R.S. 1834, professor of geology King's College, London, and in Dublin University 1844, president Geological Society 1859-60, LL.D. Cambridge 1866, and Dublin 2 Sep. 1857, deputy-reader in geology at Oxford 1853-7, president British Association 1868, keeper of the Ashmolean Museum 1854-70, professor of geology and keeper of the University Museum 1857, until his death 24 April, 1874.
