American geographer, geologist, geomorphologist, and meteorologist, often called the "father of American geography"; Sturgis-Hooper Professor of Geology, Emeritus, in Harvard University, Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Exchange Professor to the University of Berlin and to the Sorbonne.
