AMUSEMENT TAX PIONEER.
Mr Malthus Questell Holyoake, the author of the entertainment tax proposal, died at his hoe in Highgate, at the age of 80.
More than forty years ago he wrote a pamphlet entitled "Taxation of Amusements," which he circulated to members of Parliament and other but thirty years passed before his suggestion was adopted by the Government. The entertainment tax has produced to date more than £100,000,000.
He was a son of the pioneer of the co-operative movement.
