The note about the storyline of 'Forward Commandos' is in error. the story is not about soldiers in the 2nd WW, but about a group of boys aged about 10 or 11 during the 2WW. The black soldier is not a 'soldier ' but Banty - one of the boys who happens to be black. I read this book first when it was left at my father's work - a London Hotel, when I was about 10 (1957) It was the first book I ever read 'for myself' It stayed with me, engendered an interest in the US which has remained all my life. Last year a friend found a copy on the web and bought it for me. Ah what memories, smells, feelings and surprisingly knowledge of the text. I thouroughly enjoyed reading it again aged 62.
