Born on 13 January 1882. Educated at Bowdoin College (BA, 1904) and Harvard University (PhD, 1908). Thomas Brackett Reed Professor of History and Political Science at Bowdoin College, 1911–12; Walter D. and Edith M. L. Scull Professor of English and Constitutional History at Harverford College, 1917–52. Also taught at the University of Wisconsin, 1908–10, and Cornell University, 1912–17; and served as Chief of the Italian Division of the American Commission to Negotiate Peace, 1918–19. Awarded the Doctor of Humane Letters (DHL) higher degree by Haverford College in 1952. Died 10 November 1956.[1][2][3]
