Letter to the London Library
by Thomas Carlyle
1860 letter commending a library clerk, as it was published in A Catalogue of the Dr. Samuel A. Jones Collection by the University of Michigan, 1919.
Mr. Miller
London Library
12. St. James's Square

Mr Miller, who is now about removing to a better post, has served, these last Eight years, in the London Library, as one of the Clerks there; and, I have reason to believe, has proved himself uniformly an amiable, punctual, polite, diligent and intelligent young man; giving great satisfaction to his Employers. Whatever I, for my part, have happened to know of him is to his advantage.

T. Carlyle

Chelsea, 6 Feby 1860
