The United States circuit courts were created in the Judiciary Act of 1789 as federal courts of both trial and appellate jurisdiction. Their appellate jurisdiction was later transferred to what are now the United States Courts of Appeals, and their trial jurisdiction to the United States District Courts. The Circuit Courts were abolished in 1911.
