Ideally, every work should be placed in the basic categories. This can be a daunting task for editors that don't have a thorough understanding of Wikisource's category system, so this page helps you quickly find the basic categories. The information needed to do so can often be found in Wikipedia.

[edit] Basic categories
[edit] date
The year the work is first published. For example, a work published in 1805 is categorized to Category:1805 works.

Works should always be placed in this category by a license template, never manually; see Help:Copyright tags.
[edit] type
The type of work; for example, The Gods of Mars is categorized to Category:Novels.

[edit] Additional categories
[edit] country
The country the work is primarily published in. For example, God Save the Queen is categorized to Category:Canada.
[edit] genre
The genre the work best fits in (some works fit in several genres). If the genre you're looking for isn't listed, try looking in one of the general categories (like Fiction), or ask Pathoschild or the community.
[edit] subject
Major subjects covered in the work. This category requires judgment and often requires that you carefully read the work. Subjects are classified into general categories; try looking through them all.
[edit] Author pages
[edit] nationality
The country the author primarily published from. For example, Author:George W. Bush is categorized to Category:United States authors.

[edit] occupation
The author's primary occupations (president, janitor, et cetera).

[edit] automatic
The following categories are automatically added by the templates if the relevant information is provided:
- {{author}} (documentation):
- the family name;
- the general period the author lived in according to the Wikisource system;
- the dates of birth and death.
