Bruce, Gainsford, Q.C., recorder of Bradford since 1877, solicitor-general county palatine of Durham since 1878, a member of the North-eastern circuit, member of the Bar Committee since Dec., 1883, educated at Glasgow Univ., one of the authors of Williams and Bruce's Admiralty Practice and of Maude and Pollock on the Law of Merchant Shipping, contested Gateshead 1880 and Newcastle-on-Tyne 1883, law reporter for Incorporated Council 186–-75, a student of the Middle Temple 15 Nov., 1856, called to the bar 10 June, 1859, Q.C., 1883 (eldest son of John Collingwood Bruce, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, doctor of laws and schoolmaster); born , 1834; married , 1868, Sophia, dau. of Francis Jackson, Esq., of Chertsey.
