Garth, Sir Richard, M.A., chief justice of Bengal since 1875, M.P. Guildford 1866–8, M.A., Christ Church, Oxon, 1845, from Eton, counsel to Incorporated Law Society, went the Home circuit, knighted 13 May, 1875, lord of the manor of Morden, a student of Lincoln's Inn 9 July, 1842 (then aged 22), called to the bar 19 Nov., 1847, Q.C. 24 July, 1866, bencher 26 July, 1866 (eldest son of Rev. Richard Garth, of Farnham, Surrey); born , 1820; married 27 June, 1847, Clara, dau. of William Loftus Lowndes, Esq., Q.C., and has issue.
