Pontifex, Charles, B.A., Trin. Coll., Camb., 1854, a member of the Indian council, legal adviser of secretary of state for India and agent to administrator-general of India since 1882, puisne judge Calcutta 1872-82, a student of the Inner Temple 21 April, 1851 (then aged 19), called to the bar 1 May, 1854 (eldest son of John Pontifex, of Blackheath, solicitor); born , 1832; married 3 Aug., 1881, Grace, widow of Thomas William Gribble, Bengal civil service, dau. of James Cooper-Cooper, of Cooper Hill, co. Limerick.
