Smith, Sir Francis, B.A. London Univ. 1840, chief justice of Tasmania since 1870, administrator of the government in part of 1874 and 1880, knighted 18 July, 1862, admitted to the bar of Tasmania 1844, solicitor-general of Tasmania 1848, Crown solicitor and clerk of the peace, attorney-general 1854, member of Executive Council 1855, premier of Tasmania 1857-60, a puisne judge of the supreme court 1860-70, member of Legislative Assembly 1848-60, administrator of the government of Tasmania 1874-5 and in 1880, a student of the Middle Temple 5 Nov., 1838, called to the bar 27 May, 1842 (eldest son of Francis Smith, Esq., of Campania, Van Diemen's Land); born 3 Oct., 1820; married 4 May, 1851, Sarah, dau. of late Rev. George Giles, LL.D., and has issue (see Foster's Baronetage).
