There was fought near this town, on Sept. 16, 17, 1862, a severe battle. It is called by the Federals Antietam, by the Confederates Sharpsburg. Gen. McClellan commanded the Union army, about 60,000; and Gen. Lee, the Confederates, about 45,000. Loss of former, 12,469 (2,010 killed); of the latter in killed, wounded, and missing, about 12,000.

Appomattox, Va., Battle of.

The town of Appomattox is the county seat of the county of that name in Virginia, and is situated about 25 miles to the eastward of Lynchburg. The surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia, 26,000 men, by Gen. Lee, to Gen. Grant, occurred here Apr. 9, 1865.
